The Rabbit and the Tortoise, Reimagined

There it was, running towards me. A sudden stop and with a smile on its face, it looked at me. It was sniffing around my legs, trying to find out what kind of a creature I am. Its foamy coat was brushing through my legs, tickling. The more I move my leg away, the more determined it was to find what I am.

Guess not! The rabbit appears bored and it dashed on its way. At least, it had things to attend to, unlike some person sitting on this rock gazing straight (well, me.)

I was about to continue talking to my thoughts when I noticed something crawling from the edges of a bush. I couldn’t understand what it was, so I waited for it to get out. After like 5-minutes, I see a black rock-like structure moving towards me. I realized that I was wrong in guessing it as a rock, but in fact, it was a tortoise. It was looking around, grazing a few and for each step it took, it stood 3-4 minutes looking across like figuring which way to go.

The tortoise came towards me, and on noticing I was there, it hid inside its the shell. It felt protected, from a harmless human wondering what will it do next. Seeing that it won’t come out unless it felt safe, I sat cross-legged, hoping the tortoise won’t notice I’m still there.

Around 10 minutes of boredom ran through my head until its head came out again. It looked straight and continued with its journey as fast as it could. It must have realized that it was losing the race and needed to speed up or it’s just me.

Sub-Thoughts

You must have heard the story of the Rabbit and Tortoise (read it here) a million times during your childhood, well I did too. But when I was thinking deep into this story, I came across something that I thought I’ll share with all you. That is the concept of life itself.

The Tortoise not only succeeded in winning the race but in winning the race of life as well.

How, you might ask?

Most of us are like the rabbit, running along this fast-paced world trying to bring order in our lives. But the more we run to get the things we desire, the more we forget to slow down and appreciate everything we already have. We should be more grateful for our beating heart, our thinking self and everything and everyone around us.

Don’t run through your life as you may regret it when reaching the finish line.
